The Shoe Returns to Its Namesake Street

Twenty-two years after naming a pump for a Paris street of cabarets, Louboutin gave its anniversary show to a burlesque legend.

Christian Louboutin named a shoe after a Paris neighborhood in 2004, and on October 3rd, twenty-two years later, he handed that shoe's anniversary to a burlesque performer.

The pump is the Pigalle, named for the district of cabarets and nightclubs where Louboutin first noticed the walk he wanted to design around — not a model's walk, but the "peculiar gait" of a woman he watched near a nearby funfair, later filtered through the Moulin Rouge dancers he'd admired for their aplomb. The shoe itself — a low-cut vamp, a stiletto heel, nothing structural to hide behind — was built to make an ordinary walk look performed, whether or not the person wearing it meant it that way.

For the shoe's Spring 2027 presentation, staged at the Théâtre du Châtelet under the title "Eternal Youth," Louboutin gave the performing to Dita Von Teese — a woman who trained as a ballet dancer from childhood before turning that same discipline toward burlesque. The gait Louboutin once studied belonged to a stranger who had no idea anyone was watching. The one he booked for the anniversary has spent thirty years making sure everyone is.
